David Lilien

David is an assistant professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Indiana University.

Interests

David’s research interests are in ice-sheet dynamics, past, present, and future. Find more about his current work on the research page and under recent publications.

In addition to current work on rheology, modern retreat, and radar, he has been involved with a number of ice-core projects. Some of these have related to dynamics, such as the EastGRIP core (Gerber et al., 2023) and the South Pole Ice Core (Lilien et al., 2018; Fudge et al., 2020), while others have focused on site selection to enable paleoclimate work (Lilien et al., 2021, 2024). As an undergrad, he worked on color in butterfly wings, but found his way to ice for grad school.

Outside of work

Outside work, David now spends most of his time with his daughter. He also likes to canoe, cross-country ski, and mountain bike. Multi-day canoe trips and snow are now far away, but Indiana has pretty good biking!
